A driver identified as Joshua Atara has been shot dead and eight travelers abducted after bandits opened fire on a commercial bus at the Sabon-Kurutu junction in the Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
A resident of the Sabon-Kurutu community, Muazu Garba, said the incident occurred on Saturday at about 4:12 pm.
According to Garba, the driver was conveying passengers from the Hayin-Dam community to Katari when bandits suddenly emerged from the bush and opened fire on the vehicle.
He said the driver was killed in the process, and the passengers were subsequently whisked away into the forest.
A community leader from the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also confirmed the incident.
He noted that the bandits targeted the driver to force the vehicle to a halt.
“Some of the passengers traveling to Katari were abducted instantly. Security operatives have since been alerted,” he said.
A police source in the area confirmed the attack but said he was not aware if the driver was killed.
The spokesperson for the Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Mansur Hassan, could not be reached for comments on the incident.
