Driver nabbed, charged with stealing

A 28-year-old driver and estate maintenance officer has been dragged before an Igbosere chief magistrate court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing a camera, perfumes and other items valued at N2.5 million.

The accused person, Samuel Ugochukwu, allegedly committed the offence between June and September this year at No. 1, Ladiga Street, Idado Estate, Lekki, Lagos.

Ugochukwu was the maintenance manager and driver to the owner of the items before he was arrested by the Estate’s security men and handed over to the police.

The prosecuting police officer, Tope Adege, alleged that the accused person stole an iPhone, an international passport, perfumes, clothes, a Sony camera and an Apple laptop, property of Ifeoma Obi.

Other items allegedly stolen included Mazda car keys, shoes, two batteries, jewellery and N30,000 cash.

It was further alleged that the accused person had a spare key to the complainant’s apartment and could enter the apartment at anytime when the complainant was not in.

Luck ran out on Ugochukwu when he started using the stolen items, and particularly the international SIM card to browse the internet and for his facebook account to chat with his friends.

It was consequently discovered that it was the accused person that had been stealing items from the victim, who was described as a new tenant in the Estate. He was subsequently tracked and handed over to the Estate’s security officers.

Some of the stolen items were allegedly recovered from the home of the accused person before he was handed over to the police.

Ugochukwu pleaded not guilty.

Trial in the case has been fixed for January 7, 2020.
