Drug Abuse: Kano govt vows to make Daily Trust’s campaign annual

Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Kano State Governor.

Kano State governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has promised to make Daily Trust’s campaign against drug abuse an annual event.

Ganduje disclosed this on Thursday at a one-day sensitization workshop against drug abuse held in Kano and organised by Media Trust Limited, publisher of Daily Trust Newspaper titles.

Ganduje, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, said the fight against drug abuse tops the agenda of the ruling APC-led administration in Kano state.

Ganduje said Kano state had been in the forefront in the fight against drug abuse which was in line with the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration’s agenda.

“Kano state government has established a Task Force Committee against illicit drugs and was attached with a mobile court for the purpose of prosecuting offenders.

“From inception to date, the committee has seized fake and illicit drugs worth N6billion and prosecuted 300 offenders. In January this year, we have destroyed fake and illicit drugs worth N1billion,” he said.

The governor said the present administration has spent over N200million for the rehabilitation of Kiru Reformatory centre just as the work has been completed.

He noted that the fight against drug abuse was a collective responsibility of every member of the society, hence government should not be left to shoulder the burden alone.

He charged wealthy individuals to also key into partnership with organisation like Daily Trust to fight the menace, saying “We have to come together to fight the trend.”

Ganduje, who commended the management of Daily Trust for the initiative, assured that Kano State government is always ready to partner with any organisation that is willing to sensitize the society against any social vice.
