The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has announced that the Federal High Court No. 2, Kano, has sentenced 45-year-old Jonathan Nuhu to 15 years in prison for the unlawful possession of cannabis sativa. 

The judgment, delivered on March 17, 2026, by Hon. Justice M.N. Yunusa, stipulates that the sentence shall run from the date of conviction.

This was disclosed by the agency’s spokesperson, ASN Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari.

Mr. Nuhu, a native of Kanke village in Plateau State, was apprehended by the NDLEA operatives on July 20, 2023, near the Wudil Bridge in the Wudil Local Government Area of Kano State. 

The arrest followed the seizure of 116 bags of cannabis sativa.

 Following three years of diligent investigation and prosecution, the court returned a verdict of guilty and imposed the custodial sentence.

Maigatari further revealed that Mr. Nuhu is a repeat offender.

According to him, he had previously been convicted by the Federal High Court in Jigawa State on June 22, 2021, and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for a similar offence. Remarkably, he was out on bail pending an appeal for that case when he was arrested in Kano for this fresh offence. 

He said investigations have linked Mr. Nuhu to a larger syndicate involved in the transportation and distribution of cannabis across Northern Nigeria.
