The North West Coordinator National Control Centre for Small Arms and Light Weapons, Air Vice Marshal Haruna Umar Muhammad, has attributed the state of insecurity in the country to drug abuse and the proliferation of small arms and light weapons amongst the citizens.
The coordinator stated this at a one-day sensitisation programme on the effects of proliferation of small arms and light weapons with Civil Society Organisations, traditional and religious leaders of southern Kaduna in Kafanchan, Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Air Vice Marshal Umar advised those in possession of illicit fire arms to voluntarily and willingly surrendered them to the centre.
“Over 5,000 small arms and 20,000 ammunitions were handed over to the North West centre since inception. We can have a better society when the issue of drugs and proliferation of small arms are tackled, they are the primary drivers of conflicts,” he said.
