Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has attributed the security challenges in the state to the increased consumption of illicit drugs.
Buni stated this at the launch of the Ethical Re-orientation Campaign tagged “Operation Gyaran Hali” organised by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Ethical Re-Orientation in Damaturu.
He said, although Boko Haram terrorists have been defeated in the Northeast region, still they are carrying out soft-target attacks in communities bordering Sambisa forest.
According to him, the heightened conflicts between farmers and herders were also exacerbated by the rising rate of drug consumption in the state.
The governor said the situation was worrisome and called for immediate and strategic action to stem the growing tide to save “our communities, state and country.”
He urged parents to expose their wards engaged in drug related activities.
He directed the traditional institutions to intensify sensitisation programmes, and support the government’s renewed war against drug related offences.
He, however, called on the security chiefs to do a thorough in-house cleaning to ensure that while their personnel are actively engaged in the new war against drugs, the programme is not sabotaged by some few suspicious characters.
