Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and Nigerian military have continued to lay siege on some forests located in Munya Local Government Area of Niger State.

It was learnt that the security forces had continued to comb the forests in their bid to flush out terrorists wielding sophisticated weapons after 45 of the criminals were neutralised during a fierce gun duel.

Sources within security agencies confided in Daily Trust that an intelligence acquired through DSS’ covert operations, revealed that the terrorists were from Bilbis forest, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

One of the sources explained that some of the terrorists came from some parts of Kaduna State because they were invited by the terrorists’ kingpin, Dogo Gide to launch attacks on villages in the Kuchi area.

“In the early hours of Monday, 2nd June 2025, bandits from Kaduna and Zamfara States, numbering about 100, heavily armed with sophisticated weapons, advanced towards Kuchi town in Munya LGA,” the source told Daily Trust.

Previous gun duel

Last week, terrorists stormed Chibani village in the same Munya Local Government Area of the state, before the same security forces engaged them in a fierce gun battle in an operation that lasted more 15 hours.

The terrorists reportedly killed one Ayuba Isah and left two other persons, one policeman and one Alhaji Shuaibu, with gunshot wounds – the development that angered security operatives to hunt them.

Daily Trust reports that some places in Niger State, particularly Shiroro axis have been the hotbed of terrorists’ activities with many villagers fleeing their respective communities in the area.

DSS operatives injured

Another source told Daily Trust that at least five of the DSS’ operatives sustained severe injuries and are currently hospitalised.

He added that after elimination of the 45 bandits, while some of them fled with gunshots injuries, their motorcycles and ammunition were recovered in that surprised attack carried out by the operatives.

“This ambush which is a part of sustained offensives against the bandits, followed the earlier decimation of over 50 bandits, which dealt a heavy blow on Dogo Gide, a terror kingpin.

“Gide, in the past months, has been losing huge territories to the superior firepower and covert disruptions by operatives deployed to these troubled spots.

“Serious heat has been turned on them, and we hope they will be sustained. We pray that these efforts, by the SSS that appear quite new and aimed at saving our communities from the bandits, will continue,” the source explained.

Meanwhile, the operatives in the area have been asked to sustain the tempo and ensure that the Local Government Area is completely liberated from grip of terrorists.

A highly-placed security source revealed that the air troops have also been contacted to join forces in the ongoing operations, saying “no going back” on the mission.

“The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has ordered that the DSS provides a robust intelligence for the military and ensure that is taken back from the grip of terrorists,” he said.
