Nigeria’s D’Tigress have booked a spot in the knockout stages of the 2023 Afrobasket with an impressive 83-65 win against Egypt at the 2023 Women’s Afrobasket Tournament in Kigali, Rwanda.

The Nigerian side faced a tough Egypt side at the BK Arena but dominated their opponents 10-18 to establish an eight-point lead at the halftime break.

D’Tigress who were desirous of a win saw the head coach, Rena Wakama switching up game plan to see her side put up 24 points to Egypt’s 13 and increased their lead to 19 going to the halftime break.

Not deterred by the deficit, the Egyptians put up a brave fight to cut the lead to 14 in the third quarter.

Egypt did not retreat, as they started the third quarter well to eventually take it by a 19-14 margin, cutting the deficit to 14.

The battle for the win got to a crescendo in the fourth quarter but D’Tigress held on to leave the court as winners.

Defending champions D’Tigress are in Group D along with Egypt, and the DR Congo whom they defeated 69-35 on Friday.

The 26th edition of the Afrobasket Women’s championship dunked off on July 28 and will end on August 6.

D’Tigress’ participation at the 2023 Afrobasket is coming after the ban on international basketball by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
