Dumping of refuse returns along Karu-Jikwoyi road

There is massive dumping of refuse on road dividers along Nyanya, Karu, Jikwoyi and Kurudu areas of Abuja Municipal Area Council, Daily Trust has observed.

Residents along the express road have made the divider a dumpsite since the Satellite Towns Development Agency (STDA) commenced evacuation of waste along the areas, but late evacuation of the waste leaves a gory sight for motorists and passersby.

Daily Trust gathered that evacuation of waste in the areas is not being carried out regularly.

A shop owner along Jikwoyi road said the people no longer containerized their wastes properly but dumped them by the road for the collectors.

He said though the collectors have not been consistent lately, the people have continued to dump the waste which increases by the day into an environmental eyesore.

Also, the alternative refuse dumpsite used by the residents in Jikwoyi Phase 2 which houses a mini market and a football field has been filled with refuse since the last evacuation after a report by Daily Trust, June last year.

A trader near the dumpsite said since the last evacuation by the waste collectors, they have not been to the place again.

“After they came one time with almost five trailers to pack the refuse which took them almost five days, they didn’t come again and the place is getting filled again,” she said.

She said that was the only place people within the area could drop their waste, adding that they engaged some boys that collect waste for paltry amount.
