Daimler Benz has focused on the E-class to make driving pleasurable with emphasis on comfort. This has to do with the range of engines, transmissions, suspension and traction system integrates into the drive train and chassis. The E-class shares the same range of engines as many of it sibling and amongst them are the Blue efficiency engines that reduce emission burdens on the environment. This technology can be found on the petrol, diesel and Hybrid engines. Aside from the Blue efficiency, the other engines are highly compressed turbo-charger engines that turn out high horsepower and quick delivery on throttle input. So what you can get from the engine is quick response.
There are three types of transmission. You can have a short shift 6-speed manual transmission which is more frugal and may be smooth in gear change like its older model (84). The second choice is the 5-sppeed transmission that allows you to select either the economical or sporty drive style. The third choice is the 7G-TRONIC. This transmission comes as standard on V6 and V8 model and it’s a 7 speed automatic Trans with DIRECT SELECT on the steering column – operate just a trafficator.
The E-class has an optional 4-MATIC permanent all-wheel drive to provide impressive traction. Alongside the Electronic stability programme and the Electronic traction system, the chassis is said to control wheel spin and increase torque on the wheel for better traction.
The AIRMATIC suspension help maintain a constant ground clearance, even if the car is carrying a heavy load. Mercedes Benz claims it can adjust to suit the current road condition and it comes as optional. As standard you get the DIRECT CONTROL suspension adopts itself to current driving situation.
To making driving very comfortable, E-class comes with safe driving packages such as ATTENTION ASSIST (which is standard). It’s a drowsiness detection system useful on long trips. Other optional packages are the Night view Assist Plus, Lane Tracking packages, Blind spot Assist, distronic plus for maintain distant and light package for bi-xenon light and day time running lights.
When it comes to safety, the E-class is arrayed with numerous component on it PRE-SAFE system (which is standard) and the E-Guard system. All this makes the car very heavy but then it’s complemented with electronic system, brakes, chassis and suspension.
We haven’t tested E-class latest model but if we do we would love to se how well the BMW 2010 5-series will measure in comfort with its 7-series chassis against the latest E-class. But until then we believe the E-class still offer most comforting and luxury ride in this sector.
