Speaking to Shot! yesterday, the former Green Eagles captain said the Eagles couldn’t have gotten a better group because even as all the groups are tough, they stand a better chance of progressing from Group C.
He said the presence of the defending champions, Chipolopolo of Zambia and Burkina Faso would not stop the Eagles from picking one of the group tickets.
Chukwu noted that his position is not meant to undermine the chances of the other countries in the group saying it is a statement of fact.
He therefore said nobody should make the mistake of underrating any country because it is Cape Verde that stopped one of African superpowers Cameroon from qualifying for the championship for the second time.
The former international said: “The Eagles have a fair group. The group is not a bad one but that is not to say there is a group in the championship that is easy. All the groups are the same.
“What I mean by saying the Eagles group is fair is that they stand a good chance of qualifying to the next round. If you consider that it is lesser known Cape Verde that stopped Cameroon from qualifying for the championship, you will agree with me that there is no small team in the tournament”.
Chukwu also said he has a strong feeling that Super Eagles would triumph in South Africa.
He said if the team prepares adequately for the championship, it would go on to win the championship and reclaim its number one position in African.
“I have a strong feeling that Eagles will do well in South Africa. If they can get enough preparation, they can win the championship and return to the number one spot in the continent. But the players must come together in time”.
Chukwu said although he has technical suggestions to make but will not do so on the pages of newspapers because he has direct access to the coaches of the team.
