Eagles need more than a foreign coach- Amunike

Last week Friday, the Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, made known a list of five expatriate football coaches who have been shortlisted for the job of coaching the Super Eagles. They are Bruno Metsu, Luis van Gaal, Guss Hiddink, Ratmoir Dujokovic and Peter Tyalor.

Speaking to Trustsports yesterday, the former international said the national team needs more than just a foreign coach to overcome its present problem of poor performance.

He explained that even if a coach is brought from the moon to coach the team but the necessary programmes are not laid down for such a coach, he will never succeed.

Amunike noted that those entrusted with the administration of football in the country do not know that the game is complex and a continuous process which must be guided with well articulated and developmental programmes at all times.

He reiterated that everybody keeps talking about foreign coach but there is no coach that will work miracles given the prevailing conditions in Nigerian football.

“Foreign coach is not the solution to the team’s problems. The team needs more than just a foreign coach. Even if you employ one today, where is the enabling environment and the necessary programmes for the coach to prosecute? There is none but everybody is busy clamouring for employment of an expatriate coach.

“Apart from programmes, the NFF has listed high profile coaches but are they really willing to coach the team? First, we have to ascertain their readiness to come to Nigeria”.
