Speaking to SHOT!, a member of the 2009 Eaglets, Dami Paul said so many years after missing the opportunity to write their names in gold, he and his team mates have always regretted that loss.
He however said with the victory of the 2013 squad, their tears have been wiped away and all they can do is to continue to thank the Manu Garba led team for atoning for the ‘sin’ of the 2009 set.
The former Flying Eagles goalkeeper also said the victorious Eaglets showed right from the beginning of the tournament in the UAE that they were there for the trophy.
“I want to congratulate the set of 2013 Eaglets for emerging champions. They have brought honour to the country and their families.
“In addition, I am personally happy with this achievement because the boys have wiped away our tears. You will recall that we missed the trophy narrowly in 2009 when we were beaten 0-1 in the final against Switzerland in Abuja.
“It has been hard to wipe out that unfortunate incident but with this victory, I can say our tears have been wiped away. I am really proud of the players and their officials”, he said.
Dami Paul therefore advised the lads to concentrate on their chosen career as he said they must avoid unnecessary distractions.
He also called on the NFF to continue to monitor the progress of the players saying he is in support of calls for the team to be moved to the Flying Eagles.
“Success has so many followers but they should remain focused. I urge them to concentrate on their career. At this stage, they need the support of the NFF and their families in order to make the right decisions and avoid distractions.
“ I also share in the opinion of those who feel the boys should be promoted to the Flying Eagles but in doing so only those who would remain consistent should be considered”, he advised.
