Rivers bounds were over flown in Bungudu,Tsafe and Maru local governments. However, farmers were warned not to consider this rainfall as the onset of the 2014 rainy season hence, they should not go to their farms.
Some people expressed their surprise over the rainfall which they described as unusual in the months of January, especially in this part of Nigeria.
Some geographers who spoke to Daily Trust attributed the development to climate change.
Our reporter observed that farmers have not returned to their farms despite the rainfall as most of them believed that for the rainy season to properly set in, there must be some more months ahead.
In Zaria, residents have also experienced a rain fall which has become a subject of discussion among the people.
Though the rain was not heavy, it was greeted by many superstitious comments from the residents.
While some residents believed that the rain was a sign of good things to come, others held a contrary belief, saying that having rains at unusual time indicates disaster.
The rain which lasted for about 10 minutes, fell in all parts of the ancient city.
In Kano, there was a heavy downpour as the state witnessed its first 2014 rainfall.
The rainfall was recorded in some parts of Kiru, Gwarzo and Garo.
“In Kiru the rain lasted for nearly one hour, between 5 – 6 pm, in two segments. The first rain lasted for 40 minutes while the second one lasted for about 30 minutes,” Abdulwasi’u, a resident in Kano, has said.
He added: “Many people in the city have noticed it because the weather has totally changed as if we were in the middle of rainy season.”
Professor Adamu Idris Tanko of the Department of Geography, Bayero University, Kano, said: “This is quite unusual and it happened because of the temperature invention, which means, for example, the temperature as I am looking at it now reaches 94 Fahrenheit or 34c and it is not supposed to be so. The temperature is very high in a season, which is not supposed to be so.”
Professor Yusuf Adamu also confirmed that “there was a rainfall in Zamfara State areas of Gusau and Tsafe, adding, however, that “it is really unusual because no northern state was supposed to experience a rainfall even in February.”
A Kano resident, Malam Ibrahim of Rijiyar-Zaki said: “It is quite unusual for rain in Kano to start before March or April.”
