Ebola: ‘Govt response impressive’

Rising from a meeting of its Executive Committee, MDCAN in a statement, signed by the President, Dr Steven Oluwole also called for better protection for the health personnel in the forefront of the fight against the disease.
“That the control of Ebola Virus Disease is receiving appropriate attention by the government; closure of Nigerian borders and grounding of flights are not justified at the moment given the level of threat and; that greater priority should be given to protection of hospital staff that are caring for Ebola disease patients” the statement added.
Meanwhile sources at the various border outlets have said that, government is not taking any chances in ensuring that another person infected with Ebola does not sneak into the country.
The sources said that all persons and vessels going in and out of the country through either the airport or border should be thoroughly screened.
He said, “We do not want a repeat of the Sawyer experience, and so we are not taking any chances”.
He added that though all security agencies are collaborating to safeguard the borders, personnel shortage according to him is a big challenge.
He noted that not all borders are adequately equipped to handle the health challenge of this magnitude.
