The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, has reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to tackling Nigeria’s energy crisis and ensuring sustainable power supply across the country.

Speaking in Lagos on Saturday at the investiture of the 22nd President of the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE), Abdullahi emphasized that energy security remains central to national development.

Highlighting the core mandate of the Energy Commission, Abdullahi explained that the Commission plays a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s energy future.

“Energy Commission of Nigeria, as you are aware, we do policies on energy planning and that energy really, the majority of it is power, basically electricity,” he noted.

He stressed that electricity remains the backbone of industrial growth, technological advancement, and national prosperity.

Drawing a link between the Commission and engineering institutions, he added, “And that is what NIEEE is all about, electricity and electronics. So our function as a commission is to partner with institutions like this to ensure that we guarantee energy security to Nigerians and scale up sustainable energy for the country.”

He reiterated that strategic partnerships are critical to overcoming persistent power shortages and achieving long-term stability in the sector.

Abdullahi further disclosed that the Commission works closely with professional bodies across the country.

“We’ve been partnering with institutions, not just the EEE, but the Nigerian Society of Engineering, every institution you can think of as far as engineering is concerned.

“The ECN always partners with them to ensure that we deliver the Mr. President’s renewable agenda,” he said.

On the capacity of the newly inaugurated NIEEE president to contribute to national energy goals, Abdullahi expressed strong confidence. “The president is very, very known. It’s somebody that has served the immediate president, as in deputized him. So his capacity is not in doubt,” he said.

Reaffirming his optimism for the future, Abdullahi concluded, “We are very confident that we will see a consolidated effort to move the institution forward.”

For the Energy Commission, he stressed, the ultimate goal remains clear, strengthening institutional collaboration, deepening renewable energy deployment, and ensuring that Nigeria overcomes its energy crisis through deliberate planning, policy consistency, and sustained partnerships.
