The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has begun a move to actualise the sustainable tannery waste management project through conversion of the waste to biogas for electricity generation, heat and organic manure production.
The Director General of ECN, Prof. Eli Jidere Bala disclosed this at a sensitisation seminar for stakeholders in the tannery business sector. It was organized by ECN in collaboration with stakeholders and Perazim Development and Planning limited.
Prof. Bala said the sensitization seminar is aimed at actualising the function of ECN, which is recommendation for the exploration of new sources of energy as and when considered necessary in accordance with the commission’s Act, Cap E10, LFN, 2004.
The DG who was represented by the Director Energy Management Department, Sule B Ibrahim, said large scale production of tannery waste constitutes air, soil and water pollutions adding that the menace can be sustainably managed through waste to energy by bio catalysed anaerobic digestion of the waste and leather by-product to co-generate biogas and bio-fertilizer.
Chairman of the National Tanner’s Council of Nigeria, Alhaji Lawan Sule Garo, stated that the doors of tanners in Nigeria are always open adding that the council will work with ECN and all other relevant authorities in ensuring a sustainable implementation of the project.
Kano State Commissioner for Environment, Dr Kabiru Ahmed Getso, stated the State government has been following the federal government’s project on waste management and that it has already launched a programme that is in conformity with the federal government waste management project.
