Mahama, who was represented by his vice Dr. Kwesi Atta, also laid the foundation for a new office block for Parliamentarians.
The commissioning was part of the opening ceremony of the1st Ordinary Session of the 3rd Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament.
While making a case for the enhancement of the ECOWAS Parliament, the Ghanaian President stressed that in line with the vision to transform from an ECOWAS of States to an ECOWAS of the people the regional body need to strengthen its institutions including the parliament.
He therefore challenged the Parliamentarians to promote trade and investment within the sub-region lamenting that in spite of the existence of various protocols and conventions, intra-regional trade has remained low in the West African sub-region.
Speaker of the parliament, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, disclosed that the 2014 First Ordinary Session was unique because for the first time in its 14 years history, the ECOWAS Parliament has a full complement of its 115 members.
President of the ECOWAS Commission, Mr. Kadre Desire Ouedraogo said the Commission made giant strides in the advancement of its integration process citing the historic decision taken at the Dakar Summit, which was crowned with the adoption of the ECOWAS Common External Tariff (CET).
