The ECOWAS Commission and European Union on Monday launched the implementation of the EU support to the sub-region’s Peace, Security and Stability (ECOWAS-EU PSS) project worth €29.3 million.
The project is aimed at strengthening the peace and security architecture of West Africa to "shift from a reactive to a preventive mode" of addressing violent conflicts.
"The main purpose of the project was to strengthening ECOWAS’ institutional capacity in conflict prevention and resolution, and also implementing major components of the ECOWAS Conflict Prevention Framework (ECPF) in member states," said Edward Singhateh, the Vice president of ECOWAS commission, at the launch of the project in Abuja.
Singhateh disclosed that the EU has already disbursed €3.9million and that the commission has already commenced the implementation of the project.
He commanded the EU for supporting ECOWAS in its peace and security agenda, reiterating the commission’s commitment to successfully implement the program and on time.
In his remarks, the head of EU delegation to Nigeria, Michel Arrion, said the union would continue supporting ECOWAS peace and security mandate.
Arion, who was represented by Kurt Cornelis, head of cooperation, expressed optimism that the implementation of the PSS project would be a huge success.
