The factories which would be located in Nigeria, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, will serve all the 16 member states of the sub-regional body.
This was made known in Abuja yesterday by Dr. Mariane J. Ngoulla, Health Advisor, Office of the President of ECOWAS during the opening of a 3-day technical meeting on the development of the Community mobilisation plan of action for vector control.
She said ECOWAS has signed a tripartite agreement with Cuba to scale up malaria elimination interventions with West Africa.
“Cuba is bringing in the know-how and technology, Venezuela is bringing in financial contribution while ECOWAS would ensure the political will.”
She said each of the factories would cost $30 million each explaining that when compared to the amounts spent on treated mosquito nets and other interventions, it is worth investing on.
Ngoulla said that the factory is not just about biolarvicides but has the capacity to be transformed in bio-fertilizer and bio-pesticide among others.
Chairman of the technical meeting Dr. Urias Harrington said that the purpose of the forum was for development of the community mobilisation plan of action.
