The West Africa regional body made the stand at its on-going plenary in Abuja after it debated and adopted country reports presented by delegations on the level of the MDG compliance.
All member states’ reports were discussed with the exception of Guinea, owing to being the first time it is re-joining the Parliament in two years following its recently conducted legislative election.
Nigeria’s Country Report shows that its efforts towards the attainment of the MDGs by 2015 have been commendable as it has reduced hunger from the 1991 prevalence of 19.3 per cent to 8.2 per cent well ahead of the 9.6 per cent.
On the Universal Primary Education (UPE), Nigeria has achieved about 40 per cent of this goal. It indicates that six out of ten eligible children are now in school, a credit that goes to the UPE intervention complimented by private schools enrolment.
The document also indicated that the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria has dropped to 3 per cent, with HIV prevalence in pregnant women aged 15-24 years also dropping to the same level.
The proportion of the population accessing antiretroviral drugs increased to 50.4 per cent.
The Report presented by Senator Nkechi Nwogu says considerable progress against poliomyelitis can be credited to some international organisations like the Rotary International.
