At the wake of the Mali crisis, ECOWAS called on its member states to contribute troop to address security challenge in the country and as well restore peace to the troubled country. The contributing members were charged to take financial responsible of their troops for 90 days.  Speaking during the ceremony, ECOWAS President, Mr. Kadre D. Ouedraogo, disclosed that the intervention in Mali was a great success politically and restoration of peace with commitments and contributions from member states.
Ouedraogo said “Intervention in Mali was a success in every area and since UN has taken charge of the troop, it better for the commission to refund our members that sponsored their troop personally without delay”, adding that some of the members will also be compensated for their efforts and supports.
The pact according to the president will open way for the payment of expenses incurred in the whole process by the Troop & Police Contributing Countries to the African–led International Support in Mali (AFISMA). He therefore expressed gratitude to all their partners especially the EU, France and Chad republic for the sacrifices made during whole period. He also thanked member states for their unflinching supports and contributions.
Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Erelu Olushola Obada, said the success of the election in Mali justified AFISMA intervention in the country.  While congratulating and appreciating falling heroes and who have contributed to restoration of peace to Mali, she promised Nigeria’s continuous contribution to peace and security in the world especially in ECOWAS sub-region.  The countries to be refunded are Nigeria, Ghana, Benin, Guinea, Liberia, Senegal, Togo and Chad.
