Ouédraogo said this while accrediting the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Gu Xiaojie, who is also assigned to ECOWAS at a short ceremony at the commission’s Abuja headquarters at the weekend.
“We consider it (the outbreak) as a regional security threat and under the directive by our Heads of State and Government to the Commission and the West African Health Organization (WAHO), an Ebola Solidarity Fund has been set up to ensure that all affected countries are supported to rid our region of the disease” he said.
Ouédraogo also informed the Ambassador that the leaders of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone and World Health Organization (WHO) senior officials met in Conakry, Guinea on Friday as part of efforts to develop a comprehensive strategy and mechanism to silence the disease.
Ambassador Xiaojie expressed China’s sympathy and solidarity with ECOWAS and the affected Member States and pledged his country’s support in combating the outbreak.
In a related development, the Indian, Chinese and Algerian envoys to Nigeria have presented their Letters of Credence for concurrent accreditation to ECOWAS to the President of the commission at separate ceremonies in Abuja on Friday.
The envoys are Indian High Commissioner Ajjampur Ranghai Ghanashyam, Chinese Ambassador Gu Xiaojie and Algerian Ambassador Belkacem Smaili.
