The call was made at the maiden ECOWAS youth summit, which brought together thousands of youths from across West Africa including international development partners and civil society organisations.
Delegates at the summit, with the theme “Partnering Member States to Resolve Youth Unemployment-Step towards Sustainable Development” flayed the massive level of youth unemployment in the region and canvassed urgent measures to reverse the trend.
The chair of the summit, Mr. David Osabutey said at the opening event in Accra that youth unemployment was profound and therefore needed urgent practical solutions from all stakeholders.
He said unemployment among the young population in the continent should be tackled by youths themselves because they were better placed to resolve the challenges themselves.
President of the organizing committee, Mr. Michael Opeyemi Ige, affirmed that the summit went beyond rhetoric and was committed to rolling out practical measures in addressing the scourge of youth unemployment.
The summit recommended measures to boost the economies of member states of the regional body.
