The Board of Trustees of Bingham University, Karu has constituted a 9-man Visitation panel for Bingham University with Professor James Saliba of the University of Maiduguri as Chairman.
Inaugurating the panel in Jos, recently, the Chairman of the board, Retired Justice James Ogede described the panel as very important in the administration of the university.
Represented by Dr Phillip Usman, he said, the time has come for another honest, true and objective evaluation and assessment of the achievements recorded by Bingham University and the challenges faced in the past five years to be carried out.
According to a statement, members of the Panel have been carefully selected and tasked to bring to bear their vast experiences in carrying out their assignment.
While appreciating the members for accepting to serve, he reminded them that their report would be critical in repositioning the University in order to fulfill its mandate.
Visitor to the University and ECWA President, Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Gado acknowledged Bingham University as “a gift from God” adding that every gift that comes from God has to be handled very well because it is very precious.
Quoting the parable of Jesus in Matthew 25:19, the cleric said that leaders should inspect what they expect, hence the idea behind the evaluation, which is to check whether or not the University is achieving her set goals.
“We are not out to find fault but to find out what is wrong and address it. ECWA is on a mission to have an Everest of all Universities beyond Nigeria. We will continue to pursue perfection and attain excellence because the God we serve is a God of excellence,” he said.
The panel according to him is their quest to pursue perfection and attain excellence for Bingham and ECWA, saying, “The eyes of the world are on us and expect us to do better than what we are doing now.”
Responding, Prof. Barnabas Williams Qurix, who spoke on behalf of other members appreciated ECWA leadership for choosing them to serve saying “It is a privilege, if there was a time that Bingham requires our support, the time is now that the Church is facing challenges in accessing quality education.”
He then solicitedfor the support and cooperation of ECWA leadership and other stakeholders and promised the panel members willingness to carry out the assignment in accordance with the terms of reference and to the glory of God.
Other members of the panel were Prof. Barnabas Williams, Mrs. Florence Dada, Barr. Daniel Gwaza, Prof. Sunday Bassey, Prof. Gabriel Motty, Arc. Godwin Williams and Rev. Dr. Ezekiel Adeley.
In his remark, the General Secretary, Rev. Yunusa Nmadu said the idea of a visitation panel is statutory and in line with the laws guiding the establishment of universities in Nigeria to review the university governance at intervals.
He described as temporal the economic challenges facing the university, adding that the situation in the university is not as precarious as being peddled in many quarters saying, “Whatever is happening in Bingham is temporal.”
“Our expectation is that the panel will do a thorough work and come up with suggestions to put the university on its right footing,” he said.
