Manchester United has announced the promotion of Richard Arnold to the new role of chief executive, with Ed Woodward’s exit as executive vice-chairman confirmed for February 1.

Arnold, formerly group managing director, will take over from Woodward as the English Premier League football club’s most senior executive next month.

He said: “I am honoured to have the chance to serve this great club and its fans. I am determined to return that honour in any way I can.”

United announced in April that Woodward would step down from his role as executive vice-chairman, although no official date for his exit was outlined. United confirmed Woodward’s impending departure shortly before the club announced that it would be joining Premier League rivals Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in withdrawing from the controversial European Super League project.

Shortly after details of the Super League were announced, Woodward stepped down from his position on the Uefa Professional Football Strategy Council. Woodward joined the club in 2005 and had served as executive vice-president since 2012.

Arnold has worked for United for over 14 years, joining as commercial director in August 2007 before becoming group managing director in March 2013 as part of a leadership reshuffle at Old Trafford.
