Edo cleric arrested over alleged abuse of minors

The Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has arrested the Bishop of Royal Life of Christ Brethren Ministry, Gideon Osagie Osaze, over allegations of sexual abuse involving two sisters alleged to be minors.

Daily Trust gathered that the bishop was reported following a formal complaint lodged by the victims.

A statement by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah, revealed that the two sisters claimed the bishop exploited his position of authority and trust to perpetrate the acts while intimidating them into silence.

The victims alleged they were subjected to threats, forced oaths, and psychological manipulation to prevent them from speaking out.

They stated that they only reported the alleged abuse after finally confiding in a trusted family member.

Responding to the allegations, the bishop denied the claims, asserting that one of the complainants had told him she was 21 years old.

He maintained that they were involved in a consensual private relationship and claimed to have even proposed marriage to her.

Confirming the arrest, the commissioner, Mrs. Abdallah said the bishop was apprehended following a lawful operation.

She emphasized that due process would be strictly followed and that the rights and identities of the victims would be protected throughout the legal proceedings.

Also speaking on the matter, the Manager of the Vivian Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), Dr. Faith Edobor, confirmed that the victims were examined at the centre and that the case has been formally documented as part of the report to the authorities.
