The Africa Cataract and Eye Foundation will from February 26 to March 3, 2019 provide free eye care and general medical services to residents of Agbede community in Edo State.

The free services will include 250 reading glasses, 500 eye check and medications, 500 de-worming medications for school children, 200 glaucoma screening and 200 diabetic screening.

The co-coordinator of the programme, Dr Mejuya Okorodudu, stated in a release that the objective of the programme was not only to free the Agbede community from cataract and glaucoma, which he described as diseases of public health importance, but also to seize the opportunity of the exercise to create public awareness for the irreversible diseases.

According to the sponsors of the project, Mr E.A Iginla and Bala Yesufu, the initiative was to free the Agbede community from cataract, which they said was one of the leading causes of blindness in that part of the country.

They added that there would be 100 free cataract operations for community members diagnosed with the ailment.

“Patients diagnosed with having eye challenges would be subjected to surgeries and related treatments,” they said.
