The Edo State government has reopened the Adult and Non-Formal Education centres for the benefit of those who could not afford education earlier in life especially, the womenfolk.

It said the re-opening of the centres, after 10 years, would bridge the literacy and gender gap and encourage enrollment of more females, especially those who couldn’t get formal education earlier in life.

Special adviser to the governor on gender issues, Ms. Efosa Uyigue, who disclosed this during an awareness campaign organised in collaboration with the state Ministry of Education in Igueben Local Government Area, said the development would afford women who take care of the home, an opportunity to further their education.

She said the awareness campaign focused on the importance of girls’ education, adding that any community that desired to develop must encourage women to acquire education.

“We are going to do everything to ensure that the programme is sustained to achieve the desired objectives,” she said.

On his part, the chairman, Igueben Local Government Area, Jossie Ogedegbe, said the adult education programme was reactivated to enable women and other out-of-school adults have access to education.
