The National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) has dissolved its Edo State executive and placed it on indefinite suspension following the resignation of its representative, Comrade Mike Ochei, from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State Caretaker Committee.

Announcing the decision at a press conference in Kaduna on Thursday, the union’s General Secretary, Comrade Ali Baba, said the drastic action became necessary after Ochei, chairman of the Edo State Tailors, pulled out of the Professor Monday Igbafen-led caretaker committee without consulting the union.

“It was resolved that the Edo State Executive committee of the union should be dissolved forthwith,” Ali Baba declared.

“As we speak, the Edo state executive of our union has been placed on indefinite suspension.”

He described Ochei’s resignation as “a unilateral action” that does not represent the union’s position, stressing that it violated the “democratic traditions, collective spirit, and organizational discipline” of the textile workers.

The General Secretary explained that the move had caused serious disaffection within the labour movement and could have “tarnished the image of our union.”

To address the fallout, the union’s Deputy General Secretary was dispatched to Benin City to apologize to the NLC caretaker committee and reaffirm loyalty to the national leadership.

“We remain firmly loyal to and supportive of the leadership of the NLC under Comrade Joe Ajaero,” Ali Baba stated. “We equally reaffirm our full support for the Edo State Caretaker Committee of the NLC as duly constituted by the National Secretariat.”

He added that the union is also investigating the role of individuals allegedly involved in the reported assault on journalists during the Edo crisis, warning that “severe disciplinary measures” would follow.

“As a proud affiliate of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), we stand unshaken in our commitment to the unity and progress of the Nigeria Labour Congress,” Ali Baba concluded.
