 Presidency: Magu not sacked

The Presidency has denied a media report that President Muhammadu Buhari has removed the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, made the denial in a statement he posted on his Facebook wall on Saturday.

The presidential spokesman described the report as speculative and pre-emptive.

President Buhari had recently ordered the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to investigate allegations of corruption leveled against Magu and other government officials.

Based on a “damning” report from the Department of State Security (DSS), the Senate had refused to confirm the nomination of Magu as substantive chairman of the EFCC.

Shehu said today that no report had been made available to the Presidency by the Attorney-General of the Federation over the matter.

"We are reading reports that the EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu has been sacked. No report has been made available to the Presidency by the Attorney General of the federation over the matter. The report of his sack is therefore speculative and pre-emptive," he stated.
