The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), yesterday, said it has arrested the Gombe State Commandant of the Nigerian Peace Corps, one Ambrose Enoch, over alleged employment scam and extortion.

A source told Daily Trust that the commandant was arrested by the Gombe Zonal office of the EFCC over financial impropriety bordering on employment scam and extortion of money from the general public under the pretext of offering them appointment into the organisation and provision of training kit amounting to N54 million.

It was gathered that Enoch’s arrest was prompted following a petition written by some aggrieved members of the state command of the Peace Corps, after which the commission undertook preliminary investigation and invited the state commandant for questioning.

According to the EFCC, preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were deceived to pay various sums of money ranging from N3,000 to N60,000 between December 2016 and March 2017, into the corps account domiciled in one of the new generation banks, amounting to the tune of N54 million.

“The commandant withdrew the sum of N3.5 million for personal use, transferred the sum of N20 million into his personal account and remitted the sum of N18.7 million into the corps account at the headquarters, Abuja,” the EFCC said.

The commission added that other withdrawals were made by individuals under the instruction of the commandant which appeared suspicious.
