The fundamental question is on the legitimacy of the action of the commission. Were the former governors’ arrest a witch hunt or genuinely a move against corruption? Was it not the usual EFCC gimmick to win public sympathy? Not much has changed in the way the commission operates since it was established about seven years ago. It will invite the suspects for interrogation then go ahead to do publicity stunt. Because of this, there is always trial by media before the suspects are taken to court.

The commission repeated this game in its recent arrest of former Governors Mohammed Goje, Gbenga Daniel, Adebayo Alao Akala and Aliyu Akwe Doma. The commission had declared Goje wanted and this gave the public a wrong impression about him. The man quickly reported to the commission’s headquarters only to be detained. While appreciating EFCC’s efforts to fight corruption in Nigeria, one will expect that the commission will be sincere in the entire process.

I am not in support of anyone who loots the treasury, whether at the state or national level.  Suspected looters should be charged to court and if found guilty, punished. My concern is the institutions and the processes should be honest and transparent.
