The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it has secured 37 convictions for various offences related to economic and financial crimes in the first quarter of 2019 at the Gombe Zonal office.

 

The Head of Operations at the zonal office, Mr Micheal Wetkas disclosed this on Monday while addressing newsmen on the achievement of the commission between January and April 2019.

 

He said the commission had also recovered the sum of N55, 627, 341 in both cash and draft, adding that it has forfeited seven landed properties to the federal government valued at N18.8 million.

 

Mr Wetkas added that the EFCC has received a total of 80 petitions during the period under review, “out of which we secured the conviction of 42 persons from various courts across the four states of Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe and Taraba covers by the zonal office.”

 

 

According to him, eight of the convicts are in connection with votes buying during the 2019 elections, including a serving councilor, while three others are related to counterfeit currency.

 

 

The zonal head identified employment and land scams, cyber crimes and currency counterfeit as prevailing crimes in the zone.

 

He therefore advised members of the public to be vigilant and assist the commission with credible information to help rid the society of corruption and other related offenses.
