I am a typical Nigerian who wakes up every day imagining how good Nigeria will be if some of us acted with empathy, whether in public or government work places, or in our day to day affairs.
I was wondering why, apart from former governors Joshua Dariye of Plateau and Jolly Nyame of Taraba and the recent Kwara State local government chairmen, not much is heard of our past governors or local government chairmen that are on trial by the EFCC.
Between 2016 and 2017, the federal government disbursed to various states and local governments intervention funds to help them tackle their financial constraints, but few of them used those funds in paying pension or gratuity arrears for which the bailout funds were allocated to them; or in paying gratuities that they owed since 2011. The worst thing is that as of today, they are still owing despite the Paris Club refunds given to them three times.
EFCC should not just concentrate on ‘yahoo boys’ alone, but those who stash their ill-gotten funds in faraway countries while perpetrating the crime here. They should also concentrate on those who stole funds meant for the victims of insurgency and other calamities.
Let the EFCC hunt for all those who brought hardships to people by stealing funds meant to purchase medicines and equip hospitals and provide the necessary healthcare for all citizens. Let the fraud monitor hunt and bring the best lawyers to prosecute successfully all those who allocate funds for non-existent road contracts.
