Excessive consumption of junk food has been identified as one of the causes of several medical conditions like obesity, diabetes and arthritis.
According to a lecturer in the department of nutrition and dietetics, Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Dr. Adekunle Folorunsho, some of the junk foods are cookies, cheese burger, chocolate, pizza French fries, ice-cream, chips to mention a few.
Folorunsho said that junk foods don’t contain nutrients that the body needs to stay healthy stressing that the high level of sugar in junk foods put the metabolism under stress. In addition, he said junk foods do not contain adequate amounts of protein and good carbohydrates for the brain but contains large amount of fat that accumulates in our body which leads to weight gain.
