Egbin Power and First Independent Power Limited have partnered under the Sahara Power Group to launch the Sahara Power Technical and Innovation Academy (SPTIA), a new initiative aimed at developing the next generation of engineers for Nigeria’s power sector.

The programme, unveiled by Sahara Power Group, is designed to equip young Nigerian engineers with practical technical skills, operational experience and industry knowledge needed to support sustainable electricity generation across the country.

According to the company, the Academy has admitted 50 graduate engineers into a rigorous ten-month training programme that combines classroom-based learning with hands-on technical exposure at major power generation facilities operated by Egbin Power and FIPL.

Participants will undergo practical training in plant operations, maintenance systems, power generation processes and industry best practices to prepare them for careers within the electricity sector.

The Academy will also place significant emphasis on safety training as part of efforts to instill a strong safety culture among participants. Trainees are expected to complete mandatory safety modules covering industry regulations, operational standards and safe work procedures within plant environments.

The programme will further include practical, scenario-based exercises aimed at preparing participants to operate responsibly and confidently in live industrial settings.

At the completion of the training, top-performing participants will be deployed across Sahara Power Group’s operations, including Egbin Power, FIPL and upstream energy businesses, while other graduates will be released into the broader Nigerian labour market to support manpower development within the power industry.

Speaking on the initiative, Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, Kola Adesina, described the Academy as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future and a direct response to the growing technical manpower needs within the electricity sector.

“We are committed to powering Nigeria not just through infrastructure, but through people. This Academy reflects our belief that the future of sustainable energy delivery must be driven by skilled young professionals who understand the local operating environment,” he said.

Adesina explained that Egbin Power and FIPL were selected as the operational platforms for the programme because of their technical expertise and track record in power generation.

“Egbin Power and FIPL provide the ideal platforms for this initiative, given their track record of operational excellence and technical depth. By leveraging these assets, we are creating a pipeline of engineers who are not only technically sound but also industry-ready from the outset,” he added.

He also urged the trainees to embrace teamwork, innovation and problem-solving throughout the programme in order to contribute meaningfully to the development of Nigeria’s power sector.

“We are here to truly and responsibly make a difference. We are here to look around our environment, and we are curious enough to see how we can make things better. We believe you are to make things better and add value to the sector,” Adesina stated.
