Eternal Grace Ministry (EGM) Football Club of Yenagoa and Afini Ladies of Amarata have emerged champions of the male and female categories of the 2025 edition of Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament otherwise known as ‘Prosperity Cup’.

In the grand finale at Samson Siasia Sports complex in Yenagoa over the weekend, EGM, who were the champions  in 2022 became the only team to have won the tournament for the second time.

Earlier, the youthful Afini Ladies of Amarata community of Yenagoa, came from a goal down to beat Ezuogha Soccer Academy of Yenagoa 5-3 on penalties after a one-all draw in regulation time to win in the female category.

Afini Ladies finished third during the last edition of the tournament.

Playing in front of over Five Thousand enthusiastic soccer fans, EGM FC beat Advance Dreams Football Academy 3-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout after a barren draw in regulation time.

Speaking during the final, Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, expressed satisfaction with the quality of football witnessed in the female final, saying it’s a testament of the growth of female football in Bayelsa state.

He said his administration would continue to invest in sports, pointing out that, that is why the administration is embarking on the construction of a 25,000-capacity stadium. He equally assured that the Prosperity administration is committed to completing the stadium in the next two years.

Diri said he has asked the commissioner for Sports Development, Dr Daniel Igali, to submit a bid for the hosting of the 2028 National Sports Festival (NSF), saying by that time the new stadium would have been completed.

In his remarks, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, applauded the governor for giving sports in Bayelsa a new direction, stating that the governor has written his name in gold, especially with the ‘Prosperity Cup’.

Earlier the Director General of the tournament, Mr Ono Akpe, said the competition has continued to serve as a platform for grassroots players in the state to exhibit their football skills.

Akpe concluded that when Bayelsa United won the Federation Cup in 2021, 80% of the players were products of the tournament.

The highlight of the final was the presentation of trophies and cheques to the winners.
