Egor Local Government Football Club has emerged winner of the inaugural Benin Unity Tournament organized by Senator Neda Imasuen for the seven Local Governments in Edo Senatorial District of the State.
In the final of the competition played inside the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Egor Local Government Authority defeated Ovia North East 4-2 on penalties after a goalless in regulation time.
The winners took home N1million cash prize, the runners-up received N700,000 while Oredo I and Oredo II took home N500,000 and N250,000 for finishing in third and fourth places respectively.
Speaking during the presentation of prizes, Senator Imasuen said the tournament was conceived as a platform to empower young people, promote grassroots sports development and uncover football talents across Edo South.
“This tournament is about unity, opportunity and hope for our youths. We are committed to discovering and supporting talents that can represent Edo State and Nigeria with pride,” he said.
He disclosed that a bigger and better edition of the tournament would be staged in 2026.
On his part, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Fred Newton Erhunmwunse, said about 35 promising players had already been identified during the competition and would be professionally nurtured to advance their football careers.
