Many families in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, have chosen to purchase foodstuffs instead of rams for Eid al-Adha.

Investigations revealed that the rising cost of foodstuffs has deterred numerous residents from buying rams.

Yakubu Adamu told Daily Trust that unlike previous years when foodstuffs were affordable, the current high prices have made it difficult for residents to afford both foodstuffs and rams.

He emphasised that the primary concern for many low-income earners was to feed their families, which has become increasingly challenging given the soaring cost of living.

Similarly, Yakubu Haruna stressed the importance of prioritising family sustenance amidst financial constraints. He stressed that feeding one’s family adequately required significant financial resources, leaving little room for additional expenses like purchasing rams.

Ram dealers in Jalingo reported a decline in patronage due to the prevailing economic difficulties.

Saidu Lawal, a ram dealer at the Jalingo ram market, lamented poor sales despite efforts to attract buyers. He highlighted that while some residents opt for smaller, more affordable rams, only a few affluent individuals can afford larger, more expensive ones.

Lawal acknowledged the prevailing economic challenges, saying that most people prioritise foodstuffs over rams.
