Ahead of today’s celebration of the Eid-el-Kabir, the FCT police command said it has tightened security at various places of worship and event centres across the territory.
The FCT Police Commissioner, CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, disclosed this to newsmen shortly after a strategic meeting with area commanders, DPOs and senior officers of the command on Tuesday, in Abuja.
He said the command decided to strengthen security deployments across the territory to ensure a peaceful, safe, and hitch-free celebration for all residents and visitors.
CP Sanusi revealed that in order to further reinforce security deployments, the command, in collaboration with sister security agencies including the military, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), and other relevant stakeholders, has activated a coordinated joint security architecture under the code name “Operation Sweep FCT.”
He said the operation has been divided into strategic sectors across the FCT with personnel carrying out continuous patrols and coordinated security operations aimed at deterring, preventing, and responding swiftly to any form of criminal activity.
According to him, the move was part of the command’s preventive security strategy.
He said the command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams have also been directed to conduct proactive sweeps of designated worship centres, recreational facilities, and other venues expected to host large gatherings.
The CP also said that sustained intelligence-led operations and targeted raids on identified flashpoints and locations associated with illicit drug activities have equally been ordered.
The police commissioner charged the officers to remain proactive, vigilant, and professional in the discharge of their duties before, during, and after the celebrations.
He reassured residents of the FCT of the command’s unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property. He also urged members of the public to remain law-abiding, security-conscious, and cooperate with security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious persons or activities through the command’s emergency numbers: 08032003913 and 07057337653.
