The state Commissioner for Local Government, Femi Ige said in a statement that the local government and primary school teachers gulped a sum of N1.024 billion.

The commissioner described as self-serving the 14-day ultimatum issued to the government by the NLC for the payment of September and October salary of public servants in the state, saying, “Issuing an ultimatum on salary already paid is not only ridiculous but self-serving.”

The Commissioner urged leaders of the NLC in the state to emulate the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) by assisting the government in realising its developmental goals instead of issuing ultimatum to the government on the payment of just one month salary.

“It was through the cooperation of NULGE that the government was able to detect many ghost workers thereby saving several millions of naira. The NLC should therefore desist from heating up the polity unnecessarily. Instead of joining the opposition to misinform the public, the union should join hands with the state government in its efforts to establish a solid economic base for the state.

“Those leading the NLC should be at the vanguard of educating their members on the reality of the present economic meltdown and not joining the opposition elements that are desirous of throwing the state into chaos to fan embers of discord between the people and the government,” he said.
