Ekiti presents 40 buses to commercial drivers

Presenting the all-green coloured buses marked Irewolede to the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Employees (NURTW), Road Transport Employers (RTEAN) and Cooperative Multipurpose Transport Union at a ceremony in Ado-Ekiti, Governor Oni said having substantially improved the road network in the state, his administration was now consolidating the transport system by providing transporters with brand new commercial vehicles as part of efforts of taking public transportation to the next level

He explained that the consignment of the 40 procured buses was the first phase of the Intra-State Transport Scheme being put in place by his administration, adding that the state government was committed to reducing the valuable man-hour being lost as a result of the inefficient public transportation system.

He said for the new buses to have the expected multiplier effect, 10 of the buses would be allocated to Ado Local Government Area while the each of the remaining 15 Local Government Areas would each receive two buses.

Governor Oni who said the days of old rickety commercial vehicles in the state were over said the 40 buses were subsidised by the state government at rate of 30 percent.

While calling for a harmonious working relationship among the various transport unions in the state, the governor urged drivers to always observe traffic rules in order to reduce the rate of accidents, which had been on the increase since the completion of some major roads in the state.

Responding the state Chairmen of the National Union of Road Transport Employees (NURTW), Road Transport Employers (RTEAN) and Cooperative and Multipurpose Society, Chief Omolafe Aderiye, Chief Joseph Rotimi and Chief Akin Oyebode respectively commended the Oni-Administration for the gesture which they described as unprecedented in the history of the state.
