Ekiti is to amend its anti-grazing law to stipulate one year in prison for anyone who kills herdsmen’s cattle.

It comes as a five-man committee is being set up to investigate the killing of a 32-year-old farmer Tunde Olayemi on Sunday in Ipso Ekiti, in Ikole local government area of the state by suspected herdsmen.

At a meeting with leaders of the community, Ekiti governor Ayodele Fayose promised to compensate the bereaved family and the affected Fulani herdsmen who lost their cattle.

Hundreds bore placards to show their displeasure as they welcomed the governor to Ipao.

“ I appeal to you to ensure you live peacefully with the Fulani herdsmen in our community. We want  a peaceful situation and don’t allow any reprisal.

"We will investigate and get the root cause of this sad development and particularly why this community has become a flashpoint so we can find a lasting solution to it."

He said security operatives had been deployed in the town for security.

Commissioner of police in the state, Ibrahim Chafe, assured the people of their safety.

"I’m holding a security meeting with all other security operatives to discuss how we would secure the community with our men. The reason why this community has become a flashpoint is because it is a border town. We will be on top of the situation and this would no longer happen again."
