The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has said the state anti-grazing law would be amended such that anyone who killed a cow belonging to a herdsman would be jailed for a year.

 Fayose also said a five-man committee would be set up to investigate the root cause of the killing of a farmer, Mr. Tunde Olayemi, 32, on Sunday in Ipao Ekiti, Ikole Local Government, by suspected herdsmen in the agrarian community.

 At a meeting with leaders of the community yesterday, Fayose promised to compensate the bereaved family and the affected Fulani herdsmen who lost their cattle.

The governor, who was welcomed by hundreds of the people of the community with placards to show their displeasure at the sad development, appealed to the people of Ipao not to embark on a reprisal.

 He said, “We will investigate and get to the root cause of this sad development and, particularly, why this community has become a flashpoint, so we can find a lasting solution to it.”

He said security operatives had been deployed in the town for security.

 The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ibrahim Chafe, also assured the people of their safety.

 “I’m holding a security meeting with all other security operatives to discuss how we will secure the community with our men. The reason why this community has become a flashpoint is because it is a border town. We will be on top of the situation and this will no longer happen again,” he said.
