Governor Nasir el-Rufai has called for the merger between the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) because they now virtually perform the same functions.
The governor said this Friday when he spoke at the closing ceremony of the National Council on Communication Technology in Kaduna.
“The national policy on telecommunications and broadcasting are overdue for harmonisation. To recognise digital convergence and increasing movement towards mobile platform, there must be convergence between the institutions’ legal and regulatory frameworks to enable ultimate use of our ICT endowment and ensure unprecedented investments in the sector.
“I am suggesting we should have one single regulator for the two sectors: NCC and NBC should become one and one regulator should be regulating both the telecommunications and broadcasting sector because they are now one and the same”, he said.
He said if properly explored, the ICT sector would be Nigeria’s next cash cow.
