Elayo hid his face in his palms when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer, Professor Abdulmumini, Rafindadi announced the return of his candidate for a second term on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at about 5:01 am.
When he freed his face from his palms, his eyes were dripping with tears as he struggled to lift himself from his seat to receive handshakes from well-wishers. His nose dripped, too, while he rushed for his pocket to fetch a handkerchief to clean up.
Elayo, who is also the commandant of the Command Centre, a campaign strategy room of the APC, rushed to his waiting car and headed to Government House with his own copy of the statement of result clucked to his chest.
Al-Makura won a second term, polling a total of 309,656 to defeat his main challengers Labaran Maku of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), who polled 178,983, and Yusuf Agabi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who came a distant third with 126,882.
The combined votes of both the APGA, and the PDP is 305, 865, which is 3,791 less than the 309,656 polled by Al-Makura.
