Elections: Teachers urge FG to secure schools, ensure security

The union also urged security agencies in the country to increase efforts in quest to fight Boko Haram and ensuring that students and schools are adequately protected before, during and after the elections.
NUT President, Comrade Michael Alogba Olukoya, made the plea in Abuja during the union’s 2015 annual Solemn Assembly, organised for prayers for the nation, and for the release of over 200 schoolgirls abducted by insurgents in Chibok, Borno State about eight months ago.
“This is an election year and we want all our security agencies to be up and doing to ensure that our schools are secured, our teachers are safe so that education can be moved to the next level.
“It is quite unfortunate that since this Boko Haram matter started, teachers and pupils have been the most affected victims. We don’t like it and it’s a challenge. But being a new year, I urge all the security operatives, be you the State Security Service, police, soldiers, to redouble their efforts to stem the tide,” Olukoya said.  
On austere measures proposed by the Federal Government, he said the union would vehemently resist any attempt by the government at all levels to transfer the burden of austerity on teachers.
“This year, we as labour must tighten our belt to ensure that we look at our leaders eye-ball to eye-ball because if all the feelers we are getting are anything to write home about, it is not going to be rosy, especially public education.
“I attended a meeting very recently and the news we heard was nothing to write home about. So we as labour, are strategizing that anything that will affect the welfare of our members will be resisted,”  he said.
