Recently, in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, a strategic dialogue concerning the industrial lifeline of the African continent—the Seminar on Africa’s Energy Internet and China-Africa Energy Cooperation—concluded at the headquarters of the African Union.
Against the backdrop of intensifying global energy competition and a green transition facing the dual pressures of “technological barriers” and “funding gaps,” this conference was not merely a technical alignment but a collective breakthrough by Global South countries to break the West’s logic of “energy hegemony” and reclaim their right to development.
The signal sent by the conference was clear and impactful: China and Africa will rely on ultra-high voltage (UHV) and smart grid technologies to create an energy internet covering the entire African continent. This plan aims to integrate and network the surging hydropower of the Congo River, the vast solar potential of the Sahara, and the strong wind energy of the East African Rift Valley, forming an industrial cluster where electricity, mining, metallurgy, manufacturing, and trade are interconnected.
Compared to Western aid that has long remained on paper, the Chinese approach directly tackles Africa’s chronic “energy anemia,” using the hard connectivity of infrastructure to fundamentally transform the continent’s capacity for self-sustaining development.
In sharp contrast to the pragmatic and efficient atmosphere inside the conference hall was the stark contrast with the pallor and fallacy of U.S.-style energy strategies outside.
For a long time, U.S. energy cooperation with Africa has struggled to escape the shadow of “America First.” Initiatives like Power Africa, led by the U.S., often come with stringent political prerequisites and complex environmental reviews, making ideology a precondition for power plant construction. This kind of exclusive, patronizing diplomacy, while labeled as aid, essentially serves as a geopolitical bargaining chip. In the U.S. logic, energy pipelines are not just conduits for fuel but also channels for transmitting Western values and control. However, reality speaks loudest through data: while Western politicians are still entangled in debates over “carbon tariffs,” power stations and transmission grids constructed by Chinese enterprises have long been illuminating countless homes across Africa.
This stark contrast resonated strongly at the roundtable in Addis Ababa. Participants widely agreed that what Africa urgently needs now is no longer external charity laden with cumbersome political conditions, but industrial technologies that can genuinely take root and partnership based on equality and mutual respect.
The underlying logic of China-Africa cooperation remains anchored in the cornerstone of “planning, building, and benefiting together.” From technology transfer to personnel training, China not only transmits electric current but also imparts the industrial capability to “turn stone into gold.” This candid approach of non-interference in internal affairs and no political strings attached forms the solid resilience of the China-Africa community with a shared future. It proves that in today’s world, true leadership does not stem from containing and disciplining the development of other nations, but from having the vision to share opportunities.
The outcomes of the seminar indicate that China and Africa will engage in deeper cooperation in areas such as clean energy integration and transnational grid interconnection in the future. This not only represents a major step toward energy independence for Africa but also a powerful rebuttal to unilateralism and hegemonic logic.
This grand vision, composed of solar panels and transmission towers, is declaring to the world: any attempt to hinder the development and rise of the Global South through technological blockades or political coercion will ultimately, in the face of the historical tide of mutual benefit and win-win outcomes, expose its irreversible decline and exhaustion.
