The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has reaffirmed its firm stance against the sale of league slots, stating that such practices go against the foundational principles of its regulatory framework.

Speaking at the league’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and official fixtures draw held in Abuja, NPFL Chairman, Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye, addressed the controversy surrounding Heartland FC’s acquisition of Beyond Limits’ slot last season.

Elegbeleye clarified that the league’s intervention was prompted by the fact that both Beyond Limits and Remo Stars are owned by the same entity—an arrangement explicitly prohibited under NPFL rules, which bar dual club ownership within the league.

“In this situation, Beyond Limits and Remo Stars are from the same source. We cannot allow one entity to own two clubs in the NPFL; it’s against the rules,” he stated.

He further clarified that there was no monetary transaction involved in the process. “The proprietor of Beyond Limits never mentioned money. We met with them as stakeholders, explained the situation, and they willingly agreed to step aside without any argument or financial demands,” Elegbeleye said.

According to him, the league had approached other clubs, including Sporting Lagos and Gombe United, who declined the offer to step in. Eventually, Heartland FC was selected as a replacement. He emphasized that the situation was a one-off and not a precedent for future occurrences.

“If a similar case arises where a single entity owns two clubs, we’ll handle it the same way. But outside such circumstances, no club will be allowed to sell its slot,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, the NPFL confirmed the promotion of Wikki Tourists, Kun Khalifat, Warri Wolves, and Barau FC to the top flight, while Lobi Stars, Akwa United, Heartland FC, and Sunshine Stars were officially relegated.

In the same vein, the President and CEO of Kun Khalifat FC, Michael Chukwudi Amaefule has affirmed the club’s readiness ahead of their debut campaign in the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Kun Khalifat FC, known as the Pride of Imo State, is set to make history as they kick off their first-ever NPFL season with an away clash against Rangers International on August 22.

The NPFL has officially confirmed August 22 as the start date for the 2025/2026 season, marking the beginning of another thrilling chapter in Nigerian domestic football.

Speaking to the club’s media team after the fixture announcement, Amaefule conveyed confidence and optimism, stating that the team is fully prepared and excited for the journey ahead.

“We are optimistic about this new season, our maiden one, as we take on Enugu Rangers in our first game,” he said. “The technical crew and players are working hard, and we believe we can carry forward the momentum from our successful campaign in the NNL to make an impact in the NPFL.”
